A video interview with ATENA+ coordinator Alberto Blázquez from CIDETEC Energy Storage, explaining how the project is developing a European sodium-ion battery ecosystem, covering materials, cell manufacturing and real-use validation.

A new video interview with ATENA+ coordinator Alberto Blázquez explores how the project is working to strengthen a local European industrial ecosystem for sodium-ion battery technology.

In the interview, Alberto Blázquez explains why sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a promising alternative to lithium-based systems, particularly in terms of affordability, safety, sustainability and reduced dependence on critical raw materials. He also presents the project’s work on scaling up battery-grade materials, developing large-format prismatic cells, and validating the technology in real applications for stationary storage and electromobility.

The conversation also highlights ATENA+’s focus on sustainability-by-design, including the use of cobalt-free and bio-based materials, cleaner manufacturing approaches, and strategies to improve recyclability and reduce environmental impact from the earliest stages of battery development.

Looking ahead, ATENA+ aims to demonstrate that sodium-ion technology is ready for industrial uptake in Europe, helping build a more resilient and sustainable battery value chain covering materials, cell manufacturing, system integration and recycling.
